Sony Reducing 'Game Sharing' Limits on PS3 and PSP

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Sony's announced some upcoming changes to its policies for PlayStation Network game downloads. For game content purchased after November 18, you'll only be able to play it on up to two activated PS3s and/or two activated PSPs -- down from the original five.

The original policy, which some dubbed "Game Sharing," allowed you to sign in to your PSN account on a different device -- perhaps a friend's console -- and download your purchases to play with them. After you'd signed out, the other device would still be able to access the content, up to a total limit of five activated devices. The change in policy reduces this limit to two.

According to Sony, the new policy means that content purchased after November 18 can be played on "up to 2 activated PS3 systems" and "up to 2 activated PSP systems" -- actually a total of four devices in the case of cross-platform titles like PSone Classics and Minis. It's not yet known if Vita will count as "a PSP" when it eventually launches, or if it will receive its own activation limits. The new restriction will not affect already purchased content, so if you've already shared previous purchases, don't worry.

For those concerned about losing access to their purchased content if their PS3 succumbs to hardware failure or the notorious "yellow light of death," fret not -- Sony will be providing a web-based tool to allow you to deactivate devices associated with your PSN account without having to use the device itself. This means that your two activated PS3s and/or PSPs can be "migrated" as necessary if you're away from your "home console" and still want to play your games.
